You’re in good company if you’ve heard positive things about alkaline water. Beyoncé requested it as her drink of choice for one of her world tours. And Tom Brady swears by it as his must-have beverage for hydration and overall health.
But you certainly don’t want to spend your money on expensive bottled alkaline water, nor do you want to contribute to landfills with the associated single-use plastic waste.
From environmental wins to improved taste, an alkaline water filter could be the solution. But do alkaline water filters work and is alkaline water good for you? Here we unpack what an alkaline water filter does and how it may enhance your family’s or co-workers’ lives.
What is alkaline water?
Alkaline water is water that has been treated to have a higher pH level than the 6.5-7.5 pH range of most tap and bottled water.
The alkalinity of water refers to its pH, which is measured on a scale of zero to 14 based on its relative alkaline (also known as basic) or acidic nature. A liquid with a pH of 7.0 is considered neutral.
A liquid with a low pH is more acidic, such as lemons at pH 2 to 3. A liquid with a higher pH is more alkaline, like seawater at a pH of 8.1.
Water clocks in at a perfectly neutral 7.0, containing one acidic hydrogen ion (H+) and one basic hydroxide ion (OH-)l.
What do alkaline filters do?
An alkaline water filter makes your water more alkaline. Your water is not only purified, but also rich in minerals. It makes your H20 taste better and enhances its health-giving properties.
Brio reverse osmosis (RO) water filters first remove any sediment, chlorine, heavy metals and other impurities that commonly affect water quality. RO filtration is incredibly thorough – it removes everything, including alkaline minerals.
An alkaline filter remineralizes your purified water using multiple layers of filtration. These include layers of high-purity copper and zinc to reduce contaminants. Alkaline balls boost pH and add traces of healthy minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and selenium, back into the water.
An alkaline filter is different from a water ionizer. These use electrolysis to produce both alkaline and acidic minerals by separating the oxygen and hydrogen found in water.
There are four ways to alkalize your filtered water:
#1 Drop-in alkaline water filter
The Brio Alkafuse Drop-in Alkaline Filter is available in four sizes (20,000 liters; 50,000 liters; 70,000 liters and 150,000 liters) and lasts up to six months – the perfect long-lasting and economical solution to your hydration needs. It’s easy to install, too: simply remove the old filter and drop in the alkaline replacement filter.
#2 In-line alkaline water filter
The Brio Alkafuse Alkaline In-Line Filter works with your home's undersink RO filter. Measuring 2.5” wide x 11” long, it can mineralize 8,000 liters of water and lasts up to 12 months. Plus, installation is easy with its ¼” quick-connect fittings.
#3 Portable alkaline water filter pouches
The Brio Alkafuse Portable Alkaline Filter Pouch supplies a powerful antioxidant boost. A single pouch can mineralize 72 liters of water and is capable of producing a pH level of 9+. Ditch the single-use plastic bottles of alkaline water and start using the Brio Alkafuse Portable Alkaline Filter Pouch. It's great for you, your family and the environment.
#4 Shower water filter for hard water
The Brio 17-stage high output shower filter uses multiple layers of filtration. The shower head filter for hard water reduces that nasty scale build-up, too.
What are the main alkaline water benefits?
Alkaline water is said to offer potential health benefits. Small studies show that drinking alkaline water can offer bone health support, may reduce kidney stones and may neutralize acid in the digestive system. It’s also highly antioxidant and can neutralize free radicals. However, larger trials are needed before alkaline water can be universally recommended as a health-promoting beverage.
Washing in alkaline water is also said to improve hair, skin and nails. Alkaline water has a more pleasant taste and may even optimize hydration. And if you drink bottled water, it’s undoubtedly better for the planet, reducing plastic waste.
Here’s why an alkaline water filter can enhance your lifestyle.
May support bone health
If you’re wondering what minerals are infused with an alkaline filter, we have a long list. An alkaline water filter infuses purified water with iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, lithium, iodine and other minerals and trace elements. Calcium-rich alkaline mineral water has been shown to improve bone health.
May optimize hydration
Research shows that alkaline water with no added minerals has been associated with better hydration and improved lactate utilization. This is because alkalinizing water breaks down water molecules for easy absorption.
Improved water taste
Enjoy unlimited, great-tasting and odor-free mineral-rich alkaline water from your tap.
Antibacterial
Alkaline water breaks down bacteria-forming compounds.
May neutralize acidic foods
If you eat highly acidic foods, such as processed grains, corn, meat, fish, sodas, coffee and alcohol, alkaline water may be able to neutralize that acid. Research indicates that adopting a plant-based diet and drinking alkaline water worked as well as medications to alleviate acid reflux.
May reduce kidney stones
Drinking calcium-enriched alkaline water could make urine more alkaline. Calcium binds to oxalates in the gut. Oxalates are naturally occurring compounds found in plant-based foods. In theory, this could prevent certain types of kidney stones.
May improve skin, hair and nails
The Brio 17-stage high output shower filter adds natural minerals and vitamin C to water that nourish hair and skin, leaving them looking soft and supple, and feeling fabulous.
Kinder to the environment
Most alkaline water is bottled. Bottled water is an expensive way to stay hydrated but it hurts the environment even more. An alkaline water filtration system means you can kick that single-use plastics habit to the curb for good.
Or pop a Brio Alkafuse Portable Alkaline Filter Pouch into your water bottle, for pure alkalized water from office to gym to on the road.
Soft water means less scale build-up
If you have hard water, a shower water filter delivers purified, odorless water that guards against scale build-up. It enables pure mineral-enriched cleansing that hydrates with no pressure loss.
Alkaline drinking water tastes great. Because it tastes so good, you and your family or co-workers are more likely to drink more and experience all the benefits of enhanced hydration. Plus, alkaline drinking water from a filter is much cheaper and better for the environment than buying alkaline bottled water.
