Fancy spas and facial treatment bars may be closed right now, but did you know you can create many reinvigorating face masks using the ingredients right in your own kitchen and with no need for extensive knowledge of dermatology? In fact, many of the ingredients for these refreshing DIY facials can be picked up during your next trip to the grocery store!
There are hundreds of fruits and other foods that (not only taste delicious) but are fantastic for skin health. Of course, not all skin types are created equally. If you're looking for a facial mask to relieve dry or oily skin, diminish acne, or if you just want a relaxing cleanser, we've got you covered. Your skin is a vitally important organ, so ensuring you are using proper skin care products, applying natural essential oil, and eating a balanced diet are just a few things you can do to achieve ultimate skin health.
For Acne-Prone Skin
Need a mask to apply first thing in the morning? You can apply this mask after breakfast, using your breakfast! This oatmeal exfoliation mask will relieve clogged pores, rehydrate your skin's surface, and smell amazing while doing so.
Oatmeal is an effective skin moisturizer and exfoliator because it is very good at absorbing oils. When you prepare your morning bowl of oatmeal with water or milk, the dry oats absorb the water and create the classic breakfast meal. Oatmeal on your face essentially does the same thing; when applied, you can expect dirt, oil, or any other substances to be extracted from the skin's surface.
You will need:
- ½ cup of unflavored instant oatmeal
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup of filtered water
Step One: Boil 1 cup of fresh, filtered water.
Step Two: Add your oatmeal to the boiling water and simmer until cooked.
Step Three: Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda into your oatmeal.
Step Four: Remove from stove and let cool. After cooling, apply oatmeal directly to your face, avoiding direct contact with your eyes and mouth.
Step Five: Let sit for 15 minutes, then wash or wipe off with warm water or a damp towel.
For Dry Skin
Sometimes, no matter how much lotion we apply, our skin still appears dry and flaky. If you think you've tried every home remedy to relieve your dry skin, perhaps the answer has been sitting on your kitchen counter all along. That's right, avocados are packed with vitamin C, proteins, and other natural moisturizing ingredients that reduce inflammation, relieve dryness, and heal acne. This home facial will revive your skin in no time!
You will need:
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 1 cup of filtered water
- 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
Step One: Mash your avocado with a fork.
Step Two: Boil hot water and add your honey. Let it dissolve completely.
Step Three: Mix your avocado into the raw honey mixture to create a thick paste.
Step Four: Let mask ingredients cool, then apply to your face. Let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
For Oily Skin
Oily skin is a common skin type that affects many people. It's important to keep your skin cells hydrated even though you may be tempted to stay away from moisturizers or attack your skin with a cotton pad when you start to see oil developing. This yogurt face mask is perfect for providing moisture to your skin, without producing too many oils. Yogurt also consists of many essential probiotics that are not only healthy when eaten but have also been proven to brighten skin, reduce fine lines, and deeply scrub your pores.
You will need:
- 2/3 cup of unflavored instant oatmeal
- 1/2 cup of hot water
- 2 tablespoons of yogurt
- 2 tablespoons of honey
Step One: Combine your dry oatmeal and water and bring to a boil, lowering the temperature to a simmer to let oatmeal cook.
Step Two: Combine cooked oatmeal, yogurt, and honey, then blend for 45 seconds.
Step Three: After it’s cooled, apply the mixture to your face and let it sit for 15 minutes.
Step Four: Rinse with warm water or wipe with a damp towel.
